Custom Credit Card Skins With Your Photo: Do They Affect the Chip or Tap to Pay?
A credit card skin is an ultra-thin vinyl sticker that covers the front of your bank card, with a cutout that leaves the chip exposed. The short answer to the most common question is no, a well-made skin does not stop the chip or tap to pay from working: the chip stays uncovered, and the contactless antenna inside the card works through a thin layer of vinyl.
How a skin keeps the card working
- Chip: the cutout leaves the metal contacts free, so card readers touch the chip as usual.
- Tap to pay: the antenna is inside the card, not on the surface, and a thin printed vinyl does not block it.
- Magnetic stripe and signature: these are on the back of the card, and the skin goes on the front.
Our custom credit card skins are designed so that the card stays fully functional.
The four cut styles
Many of our card skin packs include all four, so you can choose after you receive them.
| Style | What it covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Chip cover | The whole front except the chip | Maximum design area |
| Window cover | Everything except the card number area | Keeping the number readable |
| Full cover | The complete front | A completely new look |
| Half cover | Part of the card | A minimal, clean style |
Choosing a photo for a card
- Mind the chip. The chip sits on the left side of the card, so keep faces away from that area.
- Horizontal photos work best, because a card is wider than it is tall.
- Send the original file, not a screenshot or a compressed copy.
- Popular ideas: pets, couples, family photos, your own anime-style art.
- Use images you have the right to use.
Finishes
- Standard print: vivid colors with a scratch and water resistant surface.
- Holographic upgrade: a laminate that adds a moving light effect on top of the print. It comes in four styles: broken glass, rainbow, stars and glitter.
Applying it and using ATMs
- Clean the card front with a dry cloth.
- Align the chip cutout first, since it is the reference point.
- Smooth from the chip toward the edges.
- Press all edges firmly, especially the short side that enters card readers.
A skin that is well applied slides into ATMs and card readers normally. If an edge starts lifting after months of use, replace the skin: a lifted edge is the only thing that can catch in a slot. Your card belongs to your bank, so if you are unsure, check your bank's terms about decorative stickers.
Choose in this order
- Pick the photo or artwork.
- Decide if the card number must stay visible.

A card skin is decorative and protects the card front from scratches, it is not a security feature. Make yours with the custom credit card skin or browse all credit card skins.
